STRIDE FOR S.T.R.I.V.E.
STRIDE for S.T.R.I.V.E. 
S.T.R.I.V.E. is an acronym for: “Students Taking a Renewed Interest in the Value of Education, " a high school student mentoring program that supports local students who struggle.  These students regularly succeed in their educational goals due to their participation in S.T.R.I.V.E.

Rotary Club of Cadillac Picks Project 
Rotary Club of Cadillac picked their Annual Auction Project for this spring.
 
Up North Arts | Requesting $37,554
The Rotary Club, Up North Art, & the City of Cadillac would partner on a beautification project for the front of the Up North Arts Building. 
The beautification project would bring visibility and awareness to the Art Center, Senior Center, and Library Genealogy Center which are all housed in the same building. 
Adding signage to the front of the building will be used to bring visibility to community and school events, and programs at the Art Center.
 
 
 
 
 
Rotary Auction Presentations
Two projects were presented for the Spring Rotary Auction:
Project 1:
Up North Arts | Requesting $37,554
The Rotary Club, Up North Art, & the City of Cadillac would partner to add new signage.  Up North Arts would work alongside the Rotary Auction Committee and attend meetings, secure auction items, plan, pick up items, and set up and tear down.
The new signage would bring visibility and awareness to the Art Center, Senior Center, and Library Genealogy Center.
 
Project 2:
New Hope Center | Requesting $43,500 (does not include labor)
Center needs:  Pole Barn for storage, Pavilion for clients, Playground Area & fence
The pole barn would store home items for when their clients can get their own place. The pavilion would be a good area for clients to hang out during the day time, it would also be a benefit to have a playground for children living at the center. 
 
After discussion, the vote will take place on November 22 at the scheduled Rotary meeting.  
 
 

 
Dow Partners with Meijer 
Kara for Dow spoke to Rotary Members Tuesday, September 20:  Collaborated with Meijer on a Plastic Bag Recycling Project
In collaboration with Meijer, Dow ( NYSE: DOW) enabled a new paving technique using recycled plastic bags to create a more durable parking lot for the retailer's Holland, Mich. supercenter. This recycled polymer modified asphalt (RPMA) parking lot is a three-phase pilot project that used approximately 12,500 pounds of post-consumer recycled plastic (PCR), the equivalent weight of 944,000 plastic grocery bags.
This project brings recycled plastic bags full circle and represents a long-term collaboration between two Michigan companies working toward a more sustainable future.
This pilot project incorporated numerous partners to take the recycled plastics and turn them into a resurfaced parking lot. PADNOS, a materials recycler, aggregated the Meijer recycled plastics and converted them into usable PCR content. K-Tech Specialty Coatings, an asphalt emulsion company, modified the base asphalt binder with ELVALOY™ RET and PCR content. Rieth-Riley, the construction contractor, produced the final hot-mix asphalt and paved the Meijer parking lot and gas station.

The Rotary Club of Cadillac is now accepting proposals for the
2023 Annual Rotary Auction Major Project. 
Proposals must be submitted by October 14, 2022, at 4 PM.

Rotary Charities awarded two grants to local organizations.  
Awarded to Viking Softball Association, $23,400 for their project of Phases 2 of the renovations on the Kysor Memorial Filed on Lesson Street. 
Rotary Club of Cadillac was genuinely excited to recognize the importance of the stadium renovations and support it with a $25,000 grant towards the new Press Box. 
August 6 Rotary Meeting 
Tuesday, August 9th Rotary Meeting Speaker:  Kaitlin Snyder, Foster Closet of Michigan Wexford Missaukee
The Foster Closet is an all-volunteer 501 c 3, tax-exempt, non-profit organization providing aid to children in foster care, guardianship, or kinship care. Ran 100% by nonpaid volunteers to provide these 100% donated items for free to these children.
Foster Parents, grandparents, guardians, and kinships can be unprepared for a newly placed child in terms of having the proper size or quantity of clothing and equipment required for a particular child. Often children arrive in their new foster home with only the clothes on their backs. This frequently places a financial hardship on the Foster Family to provide for the immediate clothing needs of the children.
Last weekend they had a back-to-school event for foster kids; they provided backpacks, shoes, socks, underwear, and school supplies.  
The Closet received a grant from the Men’s Giving Circle, which helped to buy personal items, socks, underwear, etc. for boys.  Personal items, socks, boxers, and briefs is always something always in need of.

Rotary Membership
It was a great day to learn about Membership!
1. Why do people join Rotary:
Rotary is an organization of leaders and successful people. Serving in Rotary positions is like a college education. Leadership: - learning how to motivate, influence, and lead leaders. Citizenship in the Community: Membership in a Rotary club makes one a better community citizen.
2. Who would make a great Rotary member:
They know that mere sympathy may not be enough and can be empathetic and feel compassion for the difficulties of others. They maintain a positive attitude and portray a good image of Rotary inside and outside the organization.
3. What does it mean to become a Rotarian:
Becoming a Rotary member connects you with a diverse group of professionals who share your drive to give back. Through regular meetings and events, you'll: Discuss your community's needs and develop creative ways to meet them. Connect with other leaders who are changing the world.
4. What makes a good Rotarian:
Influential Rotarians share their passion and pride with others. They tell their personal Rotary story. In so doing, they invite others to meetings and service projects to help grow Rotary, enhance the impact and share the rewards of Service Above Self.
 
So, if you or someone you know would like to attend a meeting, please feel free; we would love to have you—Tuesdays at noon at Evergreen Resort. Lunch is on us!

Wexford Osceola Habitat For Humanity received a generous donation from the Rotary Club of Cadillac!
Each year Rotary looks for major projects for the proceeds of the Annual Rotary Auction.  
 
The proposals will be evaluated on the following criteria:
1. Helping make our community a better place in which to live
2. Benefit a large cross-section of residents of our community
3. Be a visible tribute to the Cadillac Spirit Rotary Club of Community
4. Be a lasting contribution to future generations of our community
5. Help unite the Rotary Club of Cadillac members to work for a common goal
6. Be funded in whole or part by the Rotary Club of Cadillac Auction and, if possible, provide an opportunity for a club member to individually lend their expertise to carry out the project
7. Be maintained or operated by a responsible partner outside of Rotary 
 
Last fall, Habitat was chosen; the proceeds were to do some renovations to their intake area.   Every donation is vital to their funds to build safe, affordable housing, and they want their generous donor to know it. 
Past Present Susan Dennis and current President Jessi Holly presented Amy Gibbs, Executive Director of Wexford Osceola Habitat For Humanity, with the BIG check for $37,394 to help with their project.

White Pine Ride
Rotary club of Cadillac is now planning the Fourth Annual White Pine Ride on Saturday, October 1. Registration for the event is open at www.whitepineride.com. Proceeds from this family-fun ride have funded improvements to this National Rails-to-Trails Conservancy top 100 trail with installation this spring of a new picnic shelter at the E. 44 Road launch area. The club also donated $33,000 to the White Pine Trailhead currently under construction in downtown Cadillac.

About 300 cases currently, Meth/Heroin about ⅓ of those, and another ⅓ are property crimes. Meth is the NUMBER ONE issue in the courts currently. Decreased the number of people sent to prison for a number of reasons, due to a change in law, reducing the ability to place people in confinement.  Drug cases usually want rehab but there is NOT a lot of this locally, for drug rehab or juvenile delinquency. This is also a huge factor, being those addicts aren’t getting the help they really need and then going right out to the revolving door.

Jon Catlin Recognized for Service
Jon Catlin receiving has Past District Governor Pin and his Ruby Paul Harris pin in recognition for 7 years of giving.  Jon also announced he has taken a position with Isabella Bank in Mt. Pleasant.  We are losing an outstanding Rotary member, community member, and friend.  We wish Jon the Best of Luck!

Jon's Roast 
Wednesday, June 30th was Jon Catlin’s last official day as District Governor of 6290. 
Jon’s year was no ordinary year; he attended virtual club meetings, joined clubs at fundraiser events, worked with clubs on service projects, and even
visited other districts in Michigan.
A Virtual Roast celebration at Evergreen included past district governors, district presidents, family, and club members.

Rotary President through a Pandemic
Randy’s last meeting as Rotary President was June 29; before he handed over the gavel, he focused on the highlights and successes of his year in a pandemic.  The success of our Annual Auction, Great Lake Clean-up, hosting the District Conference, virtual meetings, Scholarships for CAPS students, Pint for Polio, and Strive 5k Run/Walk. 
 
Randy also honored Mike Kelso as our IT person, Susan Dennis for her dedication to a successful Rotary Auction, Mark Lagerwey as past President, Jessi Holly as secretary, and his board members.  Randy was happy to announce we gained four new members this year and presented a Paul Harris pin to John MacLeod, with two sapphires recognizing his donations. 

It was not an ordinary year; Randy worked hard to keep the club informed and connected.  As of July 1, 2021, Susan Dennis will be the 2021/2022 Rotary Club of Cadillac President. 
Congratulations, Randy, for a year well done!

Clam River Greenway Cleanup
Great Lakes Watershed Cleanup Initiative | Cleaning up our Lakes, Streams, & Waterways!
Saturday, April 24th, Rotary members, Interact Club students, Youth Advisory Students, parents, and Chamber staff worked together to clean the Clam River Greenway. 
This was to coincide with Earth Day April 22.
Over one billion people worldwide working on projects together in their communities on Earth Day.  Trash, plastics, and other littered items plague our waterways. 
This trash poses a threat to terrestrial and aquatic life, often becomes microplastics and harmful toxins, and pollutes one of the most precious and limited natural resources.

CHS Rotary Interact 
CHS Rotary Interact Club made blankets and bought stuffed animals to donate to the Cadillac City Police,
Wexford County Police Department, and the Oasis Shelter.  “We wanted to be able to give back to the
community during these challenging times.  Unfortunately, Breakfast with Santa was canceled this year,
but we figured we could share some cheer with homemade blankets and stuffed animals,”
said President of the Interact Club Isabella Peccia.
Holiday Fun!
A reminder that we will be meeting tomorrow, Tuesday 12/29, from 12-1 pm via Zoom (link is below).  This will not be a typical meeting and instead will be a fun, holiday get-together.  This is what we have planned: 
 
1) Wear your ugly sweater or holiday PJ's - We will have a contest to vote on the ugliest (or simply your favorite) holiday sweater/PJs.  So if you have one please make sure to dig it out of the closest...you may be the winner.  
 
2) Holiday quizzes - We will have two quizzes (one on Christmas and one on New Year traditions around the World).  These will be electronic through Kahoot.  If you have not used Kahoot before this is a great platform to compete against each other in a fun way.  You will need your phone or you can use your computer.  
 
3) Time for fellowship - Would like to end the meeting spending time talking with each other - holidays, reflections on 2020 and the year ahead, etc.  
 
I know this is a busy time and that many of you are taking some time to unwind/relax before the New Year.  However, I do hope you can join us to spend some time together and have a little fun.

What the CARES Act means for your charitable giving

Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act to help combat the far-reaching impacts of COVID-19. The bill provides increased tax incentives for charitable giving for both individuals and corporations, signifying an intent to stimulate philanthropy throughout America.

Important Meeting Information 
Due to the new restrictions and to ensure the safety and well-being of our members the board has decided to cease in-person meetings and move to virtual meetings, effective tomorrow, 11/17 through the end of December.  The board will discuss the next steps for the new year after December 8 when the epidemic order expires.  I know as Rotarians we really enjoy the fellowship of meeting and seeing each other in person.  However, safety has to be our number one priority.  I know this is a difficult time but I am confident as a club we will weather the storm and continue to serve our community the best that we can.
