Rotary Club of Cadillac Commits Support to Diggins Hill Tennis Court Project

June 2, 2009, the Rotary Club of Cadillac membership committed to supporting the Diggins Hill Tennis Court Project.  A collaborative effort between the Diggins Hill Committee and the Rotary Club of Cadillac will spearhead fundraising efforts during the Rotary Annual Community Auction held in April 2010.  The project is in need of over $50,000 to complete the much needed repairs and reconstruction for the tennis courts and surrounding area.  The entire 13 acre parcel will be part of a master plan that will kick off at the completion of this first phase reconstruction of the existing facility.

The Rotary Club of Cadillac commits to donating 75% of net profits from their Community Auction held in April each year, which based on the past five years is roughly $56,000.  With a collaborative effort, the Club hopes to meet and exceed the average this next spring.

"This is a very worthy recreational project and one that fits our community project selection criteria," said Linda Kimbel, Past President of the Rotary Club of Cadillac, Executive Director of the Cadillac Community Foundation, "This community is so giving, even in these economic times, we are confident that with a collaborative effort, we can raise the needed funds next spring."

"With this commitment we are positioned to start talking about the Diggins Hill Master Plan, " said Jerry Adams, Diggins Hill Committee and City of Cadillac Community Development Coordinator , "I am excited to work once again with the Rotary Club,  I'm confident that this project will be the stepping stone to a much larger recreational facility at Diggins."

The City of Cadillac and the Rotary Club of Cadillac have partnered successfully on several community icons over the years, including the Rotary Performing Arts Pavilion, the Kenwood Bathhouse, the Clam River Greenway and the Rotary Centennial Boardwalk on the Clam River Greenway, and the Lakefront Park Restrooms.

Update 11/17/2009 -Progress is being made on the final planning stages of the new tennis courts. DK recently completed a series of four design concepts for the Committee's review. A preferred concept was selected and is undergoing final (draft) design by DK. The preferred concept calls for four replacement courts with the following basic modifications over the existing arrangement:
1) All courts will be on one level
2) The courts will be moved slightly to the east to help improve site drainage
3) The separation distance between courts will be increased to 12 feet
4) The courts and associated access will be barrier-free (handicapped accessible)

The goal of the preferred design concept is to emulate, as closely as possible, the design and setting of the existing courts.

The Committee will soon be working on the preparation of an overall Master Plan of the fourteen acre Diggins Hill site. The goal of the plan is to develop the Diggins Hill Community Park to provide a range of four-season, family-oriented, recreational opportunities.
